The Wyandotte Relays took place on Friday with the brisk early-spring weather that often marks the opening of the track and field season.
The Sumner boys won the team competition with 144.5 points, ahead of the Bishop Ward Cyclones at 113. The Sabres got a big boost from their distance runners. Uziel Yepez-Espinoza and Lucas Rietema won the 1600- and 3200-meter runs, and Sumner placed three runners in the top six of both races.
The Lady Sabres were dominant in the longer events as well. Angie Mensah won the 1600-meter run and Adiella Holland and Coral Luna placed in the top five. All three are freshmen, giving the Academy a bright future in the distance events. Karyssa Furgarino captured the 3200-meter run for Sumner.

The Lady Bulldogs won the girls’ team competition, with 155 points, ahead of Sumner at 146. Wyandotte dominated the sprint races. Jaquelyn Perez-Vela repeated last year’s wins in the 200 and 400-meter dashes, and with teammates Jaylynn Hunt and Germya Sanford locked out the top three spots in the 200-meters and won the 4x100-meter relay.
The Bishop Ward sprinters showed that they’ll continue to be competitive this year. Steven Mills won the boys’ 100- and 200-meter dashes, bettering his 100-meter time from last year’s Wyandotte meet by nearly half a second. Mills was also part of the relay teams that won the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Sophomore Jailen Jefferson won both the 110- and 300-meters hurdles for the Cyclones.
In honor of the retirement of Wyandotte High School head custodian Eugene Rodriguez, the Relays added a weightmans’ relay — sometimes called a throwers’ relay. The Turner boys and Schlagle girls throwers won the event, each splitting a large pizza as the prize.

Tough conditions, but you can see the athletes went out and competed very well. A lot of good photos, but the best is the Washington long jumper landing in the pit.
Thank you for excellent coverage of our KCK kids. The conditions were a bit challenging but they got out there. Can’t wait to see how they finish!
