It was a weekend of elite performances and shattered records in Lawrence at the 2024 Kansas Relays. The 93rd edition of the competition pulled in top-level high school athletes from all around the Midwest and beyond.
Five Wyandotte County schools participated in the Relays — Bishop Ward, Bonner Springs, Piper, Turner, and Wyandotte. Piper sent the largest contingent and earned twelve medals, four individual events along with both girls’ and boys’ 4×100-meter relay teams.
Among the highlights was the performance of the Piper boys’ 4×800-meter relay team, which set a school record, 8 minutes, 24.14 seconds — a week after setting the previous record at the Free State meet.
In Saturday’s race, despite good splits from the first three runners, the Pirates were in fifth place after six laps, when anchorman D.J. Thomas got the baton.
He overhauled two runners on his first lap, and picked off the two other on the bell lap, opening up a 10-meter margin going into the last turn. The gutsy run took its toll though, and he succumbed to a late challenge at the line from Warrensburg.
Turner sophomore Alyasia Ollie was the only entrant for the Golden Bears, but proved she belonged in elite company with a time of 47.53 seconds, 16th out of 41 racers in the girls’ 300-meter hurdles and the fourth-best time for a Class 5A hurdler this year.

Among other standout performances, the crowd at Rock Chalk Park witnessed the nation’s best high school pole vault this year, a 17-foot, 7-inch mark by Bryce Barkdull of Andover Central.
World and national champion middle distance runner Bryce Hoppel, a KU alumnus, was also on hand, racing in the collegiate/invitational 4×400-meter race against the KU team, anchored by Piper grad Grant Lockwood.
