The Wyandotte Lady Bulldogs took a 4-1 road win over Bonner Springs on Friday evening, a brace from freshman Nir Darjee the difference-maker in the match.
Junior forward Karen Perez got Wyandotte on the board in the 7th minute, putting back a long rebound, and Darjee gave the visitors a two-goal advantage in the 25th minute.
Senior striker Jenna Knight pulled one back for Bonner less than two minutes later, sprinting past the defense on one of her signature breakaway runs.
The teams went to the break with the score still 2-1, and Knight made a strong bid to equalize in the 49th minute, but the hot shot was parried then snared by Wyandotte junior goalkeeper Gabbi Herrera.
Senior midfielder Isabel Javier extended the Lady Bulldogs' lead in the 51st minute with a shot from the right corner over the 18-yard box that cleared the reach of Bonner senior goalkeeper Alyssa King. Darjee scored her second in the 58th minute to put the game out of reach.
Bonner Springs took a man advantage for the final ten minutes with Perez sent off by the referee. The Lady Braves grabbed the offensive initiative, but were unable to find the net in the closing minutes.
On the counter-attack, Wyandotte's speed and on-ball technical skill on the front line and crisp give-and-go passing through the midfield challenged Bonner's ability to keep a defender in front of the ball.
Knight's mid-season return to the Lady Braves has made their offense much more dangerous, and her attacking runs challenged the Wyandotte defense all game. On at least three occasions Knight found herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, Herrera boldly charging to palm away or fall on the ball.
The Lady Bulldogs record climbs to 6-2 with the win. They will play at Atchison on Thursday. Atchison won the previous match-up 6-0 on April 4.
Bonner Springs celebrated its senior players after the match: Alyssa King, Jenna Knight, Estrella Gomez-Quiroga, Paola Ramirez, and Gabby Klein. The Lady Braves drop to 4-7 with the loss. They will head west to Junction City to face the Lady Blue Jays on Monday.
