On Saturday evening in Topeka, the Piper and Bonner Springs cheerleading squads participated in KSHSAA GameDay, the state championship for competitive cheerleading. Both teams earned a place in the finals, with Piper taking fourth place, and Bonner Springs sixth, out of 18 teams entered for Class 5A.
Lots of photos of both teams below the post. Please use the button below to share to your social media so other athletes, parents, and coaches will see them.
The 2024 competition featured a change in format, with each team performing its three routines — band chant, crowd-leading cheer, and school fight song — in quick succession, rather than spread throughout the event as in previous years.
Piper, a perennial contender, has made the finals every year since the team’s championship season in 2018. This year, the Pirates narrowly lost third place to St. James Academy by less than two-tenths of a point, turnabout from 2022, when Piper edged the Thunder for third.
The squad from St. Thomas Aquinas High School won the 5A competition, the Saints’ third consecutive title, followed by Blue Valley Southwest.

The Braves cheerleaders followed up 2023’s maiden trip to the finals with a repeat in 2024, a sign that the program — for years an impressive stunting team — continues to build its competition prowess.
The Piper Pearls, Piper’s dance team, performed in the dance competition held Friday, but did not make the finals.
The story AND the photos. Great work!
