Cheer squads from Bonner Springs, Piper, and Turner high schools competed Saturday in Topeka at the KSHSAA Game Day Spirit Showcase cheer competition, the state championship for cheerleading.
Teams competed in three preliminary rounds of band chant, fight song, and crowd leading. Six finalists then advanced to the final round — a longer routine that combines all three elements, along with a cheer to match a randomly assigned football game scenario.

The Piper Pirates took home the Class 5A runner-up trophy. The team was in third place after the preliminaries, recording the highest band chant score of all sixteen teams. Scores reset going into the final round, and the Pirates were edged by St. Thomas Aquinas for the championship.
Piper has historically done well at the Spirit Showcase, winning the 4A championship in 2018 and advancing to the finals every year since.
Bonner Springs took fifth place in the 5A competition. The Braves were fourth after the preliminary rounds, recording a top-three score in both fight song and crowd leading.
The Braves have been close, but not able to break into the finals in the past few years.
The Turner Golden Bears returned to the Spirit Showcase after a few years away from competition. The team performed in the preliminary rounds, but did not advance to the finals.
