The Kansas High School Activities Association state track meet will take place starting Friday at Wichita State University’s Cessna Stadium. The stadium is undergoing renovation, which will cut spectator seating by nearly half.
Athletes from Bishop Ward, Bonner Springs, Piper, Sumner, Turner, Wyandotte, and Washington high schools are scheduled to compete.
Preliminaries for most track events are held on Friday, with the 4A, 5A and 6A schools competing in the morning session, and 1A, 2A and 3A schools in the afternoon. Finals for most track events are on Saturday, and field events are spread out over both days.
Wyandotte’s Jaquelyn Perez-Vela will compete in the girls’ 200- and 400-meter dashes, having won both at the 6A regional at Olathe West last Thursday.
Sumner’s Sommyr Moore had similar success at the 5A regional at Spring Hill, winning both the boys’ long jump and triple jump.
Bishop Ward sophomore Jailen Jefferson swept the boys’ hurdles gold at the 3A regional at St. Mary’s, breaking the school’s 45-year-old record in the 300-meter hurdles.
Piper’s Nora Turney won the 100- and 300-meter girls’ hurdles races at the 5A regional at Seaman High School in Topeka. In addition to the hurdles, Turney will run with the 4×100- and 4×400-meter relay teams, qualifying in four events in consecutive years.
After having no state qualifiers from Turner last year, the 2024 Golden Bears will be represented by senior Chris Flores in the boys’ high jump.
