UKC league meet starts the race to state
Piper places third in boys' and girls' team competitions

Piper High School placed third in both boys’ and girls’ team competitions at the United Kansas Conference league track and field meet, held Friday afternoon at Basehor-Linwood High School.
De Soto’s girls placed first in the meet, and Piper edged Basehor-Linwood into fourth by a meager half point. The Shawnee Heights Thunderbirds won the boys’ team competition.
The Pirates took first place in seven events. Nora Turney for the girls and Jayden Henry for the boys owned the top step in all four hurdles races. Turney also placed fourth in the long jump.
Trinity Bates won the girls' high jump with a personal record 5-feet, 4-inches.
Senior throwers TyJanae Hooks (shot put) and Kylie Brockman (javelin) continued to dominate their disciplines in the run-up to regional and state competition.
Turner's young Golden Bears squad placed only two athletes in the points, but set personal records in all but one event, setting up for a much more competitive 2024 season.
Schools will participate in regional meets on May 18 or May 19, depending on the region. Qualifiers from the regionals will compete in the state meet at Wichita’s Cessna Stadium on May 26 and 27.
