Ward's Holmes, Piper's Henry strike gold at SM North
WYCO athletes show off against metro's top talent
Top track and field athletes from several local schools participated on Friday in the Shawnee Mission North Relays, one of the area’s oldest and most competitive high school track meets, two of them coming away with the top prize.
Wyandotte County schools have a long history with the North Relays, with runners from Wyandotte and Schlagle setting many of the meet records in the heyday of the late 80’s and early 90’s.
On Friday, Bishop Ward junior Tyler Holmes outjumped the field by a full foot to win the boys’ long jump. His 22-feet, 7-inch mark leaves him shy of Miti Phillips’s 1991 school record by a slim half-inch. Holmes’s jump is the best in Class 3A this year.
Sumner’s Sommyr Moore finished in third place with a jump of 21-feet, 4 3/4-inches.
Piper senior Jayden Henry won the boys’ 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.30 seconds, just off his season-best and state-leading time of 14.10 seconds.

Pirates’ sophomore Nora Turney continued her rewrite of the school’s hurdles records, lowering her time in the 300-meter hurdles to 45.97 seconds. Turney’s outstanding 15.57 second mark in the 100-meter hurdles was eclipsed only by a stunning 13.94 second new meet record set by Shawnee Mission South’s Aurora Wessel.
In the boys’ 300-meter hurdles, Bishop Ward sophomore Jailen Jefferson placed fifth and set a new school record with a time of 40.69 seconds, breaking the previous record set in 1979.
Wyandotte senior Kamari Murray set a new personal best mark of 6-feet, 5-inches to place third in the boys’ high jump. Murray breathlessly held first place for several minutes while other jumpers failed to clear the bar, but Kaleb Tesmer of Blue Valley Southwest eventually cleared 6’ 5” and then 6’ 7” to earn the win.
Bulldogs’ senior sprinter Jaquelyn Perez-Vela won two medals, taking second in the 400-meter dash, and third in the 200-meters. The Lady Bulldogs continue to excel at the 200 meters. Juniors Jaylynn Hunt and Jasmin Looney-Cooper also posted competitive times under 28 seconds.
