Wrestlers from five Wyandotte County high schools — Bishop Ward, Bonner Springs, Sumner, Turner, and Wyandotte — traveled west to Topeka on Saturday to participate in the highly-competitive Washburn Rural Invitational girls’ wrestling tournament.
Bonner Springs’ Addison Vogel was the top local placer, finishing second in the 155-pound class. Vogel pinned her first three opponents, then won a 9-4 decision over Rural’s Raya Eilert in the semi-final. Vogel lost by fall in the second period against another Rural wrestler, Emily Funk, for the top step on the podium.
Turner sophomore Isabella Brown had an impressive performance in the 170-pound class. Brown went 4-1 in her tournament matches, finishing 9th of the 24 wrestlers. Her only loss was to Leavenworth senior Jacqueline Goodman, a state medalist last year.
Goodman pulled off one of the tournament’s most surprising results, winning a semi-final match by 4-0 decision over Bonner’s Olivia Stean, three-time state champion and favorite for her fourth gold medal this year. Stean finished fourth in the tourney, forfeiting the third-place match to her cousin Grace Stean, a Tonganoxie junior.
Bonner Springs finished tenth of the 32 teams competing. The host Junior Blues — 2023 state 6-5A team champions — won the event and look to be the favorite as the 2024 state tournament approaches. Olathe North finished second ahead of a tight contest for third between Spring Hill and Fort Scott.

I like how girls wrestling is gaining popularity. That only increases the athletic opportunities of our youth. Thank you for promoting that process!
