The 2023 track and field season opened in Kansas City, Kansas with the annual Wyandotte Relays, hosted this year at Wyandotte High School.
The host team won both team competitions, looking particularly dominant in the boys' team competition, where they were 90 points ahead of second-place Sumner Academy. The girls' team race was closer, with the Lady Sabres earning 128 points to the Lady Bulldogs 153.5.
The early afternoon's mild weather turned bitter as the meet went on, with later events run in a bone-chilling rain and biting breeze. When not on the track, athletes huddled for warmth under their team tents, and erstwhile spectators sought the safety of their cars. The meet's final scheduled event, the 4×100-meter relay, was not run due to the conditions.
