Great high school track and field careers get their start every year at the Wyandotte Relays, the season-starting meet with athletes from all the KCK district schools, plus Turner and Bishop Ward.
This year was no different, with freshman hopefuls and seasoned seniors racing, throwing, and jumping on a beautiful but breezy evening at the venerable campus on Minnesota Avenue.
The Sumner Sabres took the top team prizes for both girls and boys, with a commanding advantage in the middle and distance events. The Academy swept the boys' and girls' 800-, 1600-, and 3200-meter runs, as well as the 4×800-meter relays.
The Lady Sabres also had a tremendous showing in the throwing events, winning the shot put and discus, and placing second in the javelin.
Bishop Ward took second place as a team on the boys' side. Jailen Jefferson won both hurdles events, and the 4×100-meter relay team took top prize as well, nearly matching its medal-winning time at the state meet last season.
Ward senior Tyler Holmes won the long jump with a mark of 22-feet, 10-inches, nearly three inches longer than his second place jump at the 2024 state meet.
On the girls' side, the Lady Bulldogs took second place, dominating the sprints. Jaylynn Hunt won the 100- and 200-meter dashes, and in both those races, Jasmin Looney-Cooper and Yaraj Mayberry helped earn Wyandotte three of the top four places.
The Turner girls took third place as a team, paced by event wins from Alyasia Ollie (300-meter hurdles) and Ai'yana Grant (400-meter dash).
